Final Friday at the Makerspace

Final Friday, February 24, the Lawrence Creates Makerspace will host the Art+Technology+Action show, with music by the fabulous BRC Band. I will have two pieces on display, "Tumbled Stones" and "The Death of Compromise". The Makerspace is located on the northwest corner of 9th and New Jersey. Stop by and check it out tonight starting at 6:30.

Show Opening Tonight

The "Finding Our Voices" art exhibit at the Lenexa City Hall opens tonight 6-7:30! 12350 West 87th, Lenexa, KS. Stop by and help us toast the event.

Spring Quilt Market

My quilt "Happy Happy Happy" was featured in Fabriquilt's booth at Quilt Market last weekend:

I am also proud that Fabriquilt is using a detail shot of my quilt "A Flutter of Color" as the header for their Facebook page. Fabriquilt has a wide variety of beautiful solid and print fabrics for quilters. Look for them at your local quilt shop.

Show Time at the Leedy

Whoops, I forgot to post the info about the SAQA Regional Exhibit that opened yesterday in Kansas City! The theme is Midwest Metaphors. My entry in the exhibit is made out of six vintage flour sacks that I embellished with embroidery. (It was inspired by Andy Warhol screen prints.)

MIni Quilt

A talented quilter friend tossed this quilt to me and said to do something with it. I didn't think it needed much so I just added some black sequins and a few beads:

Wish I was in Chelsea

I'm in a New York state of mind, wishing I could see Philip Taaffe's new show at the Luhring Augustine Gallery.

Taaffe uses stencils, stamps and rollers to create beautiful layered art that could be used as inspiration for pieced and painted quilts.

Fabulous, just fabulous.

Spring Flowers

There is a new show at the 1109 Gallery in Lawrence, and the theme is "Sweethearts". It runs through Feb. 17. This may be the last show at the gallery since it is having difficulty paying the rent. Artists seem to be abandoning the ship as there was a struggle to fill this show. I decided this would be a good show to enter the maximum number of pieces and all of them are good sized. The newest of the three is an appliqued quilt I call "Spring Flowers":

Go see the show, but call first...just in case they haven't been able to find anyone to staff the place that day.

 

Festival of Trees (and quilts)

Each year at the Festival of Trees about 50 decorated Christmas trees are auctioned off to raise funds for The Shelter. Individuals, families, groups and organizations put together themed trees for this event and the creativity is always amazing. I have marginally helped with a couple of trees that my sewing group did in the past. This year we had a bit of trouble coming up with a theme so I offered a Christmas-y quilt as a stand in for our tree. I think it will be auctioned off with the trees, not sold with the wreaths and other decorations that are available at the festival. Either way, this is a fun set of trees to see every year and the money goes to a very deserving organization. Here is the quilt that we will be donating:

Umbrella Installation

Oh, if only it would rain! We are drying up and blowing away here in Kansas. Lets look at something pretty. Every town seems to want to be the "City of the Arts" and my town is no exception. I think we should steal Agueda, Portugal's idea of installing dozens of colorful umbrellas over our main street:

We could walk down the street, look up and have fond memories of rain, while we are protected from the relentless sunshine. These umbrellas were hung as a part of an art festival called Agitagueda.

Unitarian Exhibit

There is a lovely little church on the south edge of my town that lets artists show work in their fellowship hall. I have an assortment of quilts there now:

My exhibit at the Lawrence Community Theater comes down this Sunday, but most of the work will then move to the exhibit space at the Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence. Here are two more pieces in the group:

Quilt Show Time

This weekend is my guild's annual quilt show. It is held at the Douglas County Fairgrounds in Lawrence, KS. Hours are 10-5 on Saturday and 12-5 on Sunday. I'm helping with the "boutique" this year, where we sell handmade items, gently used sewing notions, and donated books and fabric. Several guild members were down-sizing this year so we have a LOT of stuff to sell. Please come buy something! There are also over a 100 miniquilts being silent auctioned to raise money for six local charities.

Here is a quick photo of the one new quilt I will have in the show. (I also entered a couple of older quilts.)

I call this quilt "Nickles and Dimes". It was made from the scraps leftover from factory pre-cuts of Barbara Brackman's Civil War fabrics. I added in a green hand-dyed fabric.

First Friday Feature

One of my favorite quilt artists will have work in the exhibit that opens this Friday at the Sherry Leedy Gallery (2004 Baltimore Ave, Kansas City, MO). Annie Helmericks-Louder is a painter who also works in fabric to great effect. Annie had an exhibit in our local arts center a couple of years ago that I enjoyed very much, so I am looking forward to seeing more of her work. Here is a photo of her piece called "Blue Herons" and a detail shot of the chair.
